Seven Simple Secrets to Spiritual Growth

These work for me. I trust you will find something here that will enhance your walk with God.

  1. Take It Easy. You will never grow in your walk with God by striving. Jesus said His yoke is easy (Matthew 11:30). If the yoke you are carrying is hard, it didn’t come from Him. Rest in what God has done for you (Hebrews 4:10-11).
  2. Read the Book Of Ephesians. It is the most spiritually potent New Testament book in that it combines a clear explanation of what God has done for us with practical guidance for living it out. If Ephesians is the only book of the Bible you know, you could probably do well spiritually.
  3. Pray Out Loud. Prayer is what you say to God. Something happens when you speak your requests, questions, fears, etc. out loud to God. I know He can read your thoughts, but that’s not prayer. Have a conversation with God out loud when you are by yourself. See what happens.
  4. Go To a Church That Challenges You. Make sure you are in a church that challenges and motivates you spiritually. Don’t go to church to roll your eyes. I realized some time ago that I am not spiritual enough to go to a church that leaves me where I am. It’s not enough that I agree with the church; I need to be challenged to grow.
  5. Forgive Somebody. Everyone has hurt somebody and has been hurt by somebody. There is something freeing about forgiveness. Before the cross people forgave to be forgiven. After the cross the Bible says we forgive because we are forgiven. Think about the forgiveness God has given you and then point that forgiveness to someone who has hurt you. The results are amazing.
  6. Take Off the Limits. Don’t let your doctrine and traditions limit God. God is bigger than any of us realize. Don’t try to force God into your timetable but allow Him to do surprising things in His timing.
  7. Ask God for Your Next Step Today. You don’t have to conquer your mountain today. But if you take the next step God has for you, you will see mountains either move or get flatter. God is saying something to you today (Hebrews 3:15). What is it?
